Proportion & Scale

Golden Section

The Golden Section is the ratio between two sections of a line or the two dimensions of a plane. This is tied to the mathematical system of proportion known as the Pythagorean concept.

The Orders

The Orders refers to the different types of columns which are the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. These types of columns originated with the Greeks and Romans.

Renaissance Theories

Ratios such as 1:3 or 2:3

The Renaissance Theories were created by the Greeks. This deals with the simple numerical progression and their ratios. This theory can be used to determine the height of a room.  The window size is repeated and the lenght can be broken down to different lengths which is shown above.

The Modular

The Modular is a proportioning system developed by Le Corbusier. This Modular deals with the human body and how it relates in a space.

These two walls are designed with how a human would interact in the space. Below people can sit on the wall and the the right, Great Wall of China, no one can see over on the other side when standing at the base of the wall.

The "Ken"

Ken is the traditional Japanese method of measurements. It is used as the standardized measurement for residential architecture. Ken modular grids "floor mats" are used to designate the size of the space and each mat is designed to accommodate two persons.

Antropomorphic

Anthropometry refers to the measurement of the size and proportions of the human body. The standard measurements vary from age, race and gender. The standard height of chairs and tables are determined by the use of Antropomorphic; the way the human body relates and interacts with the chair and table.

Varied sizes of people and even someone in a wheelchair are all things that need to be taken into account when constructing buildings, chairs and other forms.

Scale

Scale refers to the way viewers, people, perceive or judge something in relation to another object. The human height is always used as a referance to compare objects to it. Example: Standing in a room at the height of 5'2" and standing next to a table allows the person to estimate the height of it.

The height of the woman in the space can be used to determine a rough estimate of how tall the mirrors are or computer dest.
