Welcome

WELCOME TO MY BLOG!!

My name is Lea and I am an Interior Design Major at Savannah College of Art and Design located in Atlanta, GA.

I have created this blog to help explain terms I am learning during this quarter at SCAD. Images are attached to help explain the terms in further details. Please give me honest feedback on my blog.

Enjoy!

Principles

Axis
An Axis has a linear condition with qualities of length and direction. It is terminated at both ends and can be established by a symmetical arrangement of forms and spaces.

The axis of symmetry divides this space evenly.

Symmetry
There are two types of symmetry, Bilateral Symmetry and Radial Symmetry. Bilateral Symmetry refers to the balanced arrangements of objects within a space, identical halves, and Radial Symmetry refers to are objects arranged in a balanced manner that is evenly distributed around a central point.

This dome structure is Radially Balanced.

Hierarchy

Hierarchy is a method used to make one object stand out more than the other or give it more importance by creating the building or object bigger than the rest of the elements surrounding it. Hierarchy can be determined by size, shape and placement.

The National Assembly in Bangladesh represents is an Hierarchy because of its location and the buildings that surround it is not as amazing as this structure.

Datum

A Datum is a line, plane or volume of referance to which other elements in a compostion can relate to. A Datum can be organized by cutting a line through a common edge, a plane to serve as a background to encompass the elements, or a volume can collect the pattern elements within its boundaries or along its perimeter.

The base in the volume in which all other elements are referring to.

Rhythm and Repetition

Rhythm is any movement characterized by a pattern of elements or motifs that repeat at regular or irregular intervals. Repetition is the simplest form and is a linear pattern of redundant elements.

The repetition of the arches, black stripes and Barcelonia chairs are used to create this space.

Transformation

Transformation refers to the process that designers use. A prototypical architectural model is chosen for its formal structure and ordering of elements that are appropiate and reasonable and then tranforming it through a series of discrete manipulations.
